Educational Facilities:

Primary and Secondary Education:

Yellow Medicine East Elementary, Granite Falls, MN*:   Todd was in responsible charge of the mechanical engineering for an upgrade to the heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems throughout the building.  The building was an existing structure and consisted of approximately 85,000 square feet of floor area.  The mechanical was $1,950,000 of the $2,530,000 total construction for the remodel.  Construction was completed in the summer of 2010.

The elementary school was served by high efficiency gas fired boilers with backup fuel oil burners.  The cooling was provided by a variable air volume (VAV) system with a centralized chilled water system.  The chiller had an energy recovery feature that would recover condenser heat for the reheat coils in the VAV system.  The air handling system had an enthalpy wheel for energy recovery of the heat from the exhaust air to the ventilation air.

Yellow Medicine East Middle and High School, Granite Falls, MN*:  Todd was in responsible charge of the mechanical engineering for an upgrade to the heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems throughout the building.  The building was an existing structure and consisted of approximately 185,000 square feet of floor area.  The mechanical was $2,916,000 of the $3,830,000 total construction for the remodel.  Construction was completed in the summer of 2011.

The middle/high school was served by high efficiency gas fired boilers with backup fuel oil burners.  The cooling was provided by a variable air volume (VAV) system with a centralized chilled water system.  The chiller had an energy recovery feature that would recover condenser heat for the reheat coils in the VAV system.  The chillers also incorporated a variable primary chilled water pumping arrangement.  The air handling system had an enthalpy wheel for energy recovery of the heat from the exhaust air to the ventilation air.

Cheney Middle School, West Fargo, ND*:  Todd was in responsible charge of the mechanical engineering for a 209,000 square foot middle school.  The school was the largest middle school in North Dakota at the time.  Total construction costs were over $20 million with about $4 million being mechanical.  Construction was completed in 2004.

The cooling was served with an ice storage system that makes ice at night when utility costs are low and then melts the ice during the day to supplement the cooling.  The central heating was provided by gas/fuel oil boilers.  The building was served by VAV systems throughout with a few single zone units in large areas (i.e. gymnasiums, cafeteria, etc.)  A heat recovery system was implemented to handle the locker room exhaust.  A variable speed kitchen exhaust was also implemented for energy savings.

Elk Point-Jefferson School, Elk Point, SD*:  Todd was in responsible charge of the mechanical engineering for a 100,000 square foot high school and elementary school addition to an existing 30,000 square foot middle school building.   Construction costs are unavailable.  Construction  was completed in 1999.

The system consisted of a geothermal water source heat pump system.  At the time of the construction, it was the largest geothermal project in the state of South Dakota.  The system consisted of terminal extended range water source heat pumps distributed throughout the facility.  The entire middle school was retrofitted to a geothermal system.  The well field consisted of 288 vertical closed loop wells.  A variable primary/constant volume secondary pumping system was utilized.
